Spencer Leigh Hughes (21 April 1858 – 22 February 1920) was a British, engineer, journalist and Liberal politician. ==Family and education== Spencer Leigh Hughes was born at Trowbridge in Wiltshire,〔''The Times House of Commons, 1910''; Politico's Publishing, 2004 p51〕 the son of the Reverend James Hughes, a Wesleyan minister.〔P F Clarke, ''Lancashire and the New Liberalism''; Cambridge University Press, 1971 p57〕 He was educated at Woodhouse Grove School near Apperley Bridge in the West Riding of Yorkshire. In 1881 he married Ellen Wayland, the daughter of James Groves from Newport, Isle of Wight. They had a son and a daughter.〔''Who was Who'', OUP online 2007〕 Hughes was widowed in 1916〔The Times, 22June 1916 p5〕 and did not remarry.
